Staying Up Late

Yes it’s true that I stay up late often. No It’s not unhealthy. People often relate staying up late to sleep deprivation, poor productivity, health reasons etc. The above-mentioned is only true if my sleep cycle is less than 8 hours. Therefore, there’s nothing wrong with sleeping at 6am, waking up 8 hours later at 2pm. Does that mean I cannot change back to ‘normal’ timing of 10pm to 6am like everyone else? No I can. It’s a matter of choice.

Reminds me of my shift work during NS – I was an aircraft technician. Working time was irregular; everyday was different. We rotated between morning and night shift on a weekly basis. I guess it’s partly the reason why I’m able to break away and adapt to new bedtime routine easily.

Of course, there’s no denying that there’ll be a lack of social interaction since everyone will be asleep while you’re awake. It also means that you’re a lot less contactable, unless the person is a night-owl just like you are.

Now,

I cannot emphasize enough the benefits of staying up late. Well, what works for me might or might not work for you. However, if you have to work or study and therefore have to abide by a regular bedtime routine, then by all means do so. But people should stop alleging that staying up late is an unsound thing to do – people gasping & shaking their head in disbelief like you’ve committed an unpardonable sin when you tell them of your bedtime routine.

No, it’s not an act of rebellion, or portraying myself as a hipster. No it’s not because research shows intelligent people tend to stay up late. *smirk*
I do it because..

1) It makes me really productive. The stillness of night and surrounding allows me to focus and churn out an incredible amount of work within a time-frame which I wouldn’t be able to during daytime.

2) Reflect deeply about the mysteries & wonders of life, in the midst of it realizing what an awesome human being I am.

3) No interruptions nor distractions.

4) So I can pen down my thoughts and blog this.

5) Sleeping at 10pm is too mainstream.

6) I come alive.

7) It’s no secret that people in the IT industry stay up late. I don’t know why. It has always been the norm.
