Social Media Reliance

It has been 11 days since I disconnected myself from civilization..no i mean social media.

What are my friends up to? How have they been doing? Is there something trending that I’m missing out on? Is there a piece of information that I should probably know about or interest me?

And for every other website that I’m accessing, it’s asking if I want to login via facebook. That’s when I realized that my facebook account is tagged to so many other websites.

I recently watched a film titled ‘Snowden’, a real-life account into Edward Snowden’s life as a whistleblower disclosing the government’s national surveillance and intrusion into everyone’s life. While I find parts of the film implausible, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that we’ve traded our privacy for connectivity.

Well, do I care? Probably not. But it makes me feel sick to the stomach that I have underestimated my reliance on social media.

Arguing that you don’t care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don’t care about free speech because you have nothing to say – Snowden
