Politics

Let’s be real here. Our local papers here are a disappointment. It has been criticized as being the mouthpiece of the ruling party, PAP, and lacks the freedom to criticize the government. It’s not a hearsay. It’s a fact. Our ‘Press Freedom Index’ ranking decreases every year. It is now ranked 150 out of 180 nations in the world. In 2009, a Wall Street Journalist was sued by our government for criticizing them. Most recently, it was our local blogger Roy Ngerng. It’s no surprise the revenue of SPH(Singapore Press Holdings) continues to dive year by year.

The way I see it, Singapore is both a democratic and authoritarian regime. No we’re not a truly democratic nation. We may claim we are, but we’re not. Our nation was ruled with an iron-fist in the past. Even till today, the ‘authoritarian regime’ is still present. However, things are changing, slowly but surely. With the power of social media, we’ve been able to connect with one another and present our views, opinions and criticisms. As we’ve seen, netizens have been furiously expressing their views on our current policies. Sure, we may say that netizens only represent a minority, but with the previous election votes, and an overwhelming number of people openly voicing their discontentment in public, I think it says a lot. During my conversations with taxi drivers, 10 out of 10 whom I’ve spoken to expressed their discontentment in our government.

By now, you should be able to tell that I’m on the ‘opposition’ side. Then again, there are things I disagree with ‘opposition’ as well.

I strongly believe in alternative views. I do read Straits Times, but I also read TRS & TR Emeritus. However, I take every editorial & opinions article with a pinch of salt. Many times, they’re as bias too. I’ve also read thehearttruths by Roy Ngnerg. It’s good to seek views from both sides and come to a conclusion of your own.

Anger clouds judgment.

Yes. An example of that is Han Hui Hui. I think she is a poor representation of us. She first needs to deal with anger management. Anger has clouded her judgment. Have you seen her favorite t-shirt? It states “Wanna sue me?”. In fact, she does make slanders that are worthy of lawsuits. She goes around the same major issues time and time again. Her points are valid, but shallow. She’s 23. Does she actually have a job? Or living off donations?

While I disagree with many policies that PAP makes, I don’t go all out with personal attacks on individuals. By labeling LKY as a traitor & lashing out with personal attacks, it says way more about you. It is utterly revolting to see someone with such a contemptuous attitude. This man deserves credit. Give credit where credit is due. Likewise for PAP, they’ve done some commendable work over the past years. Don’t hit out on them just because you’re “Anti-PAP”.
